I am Nicole Light, OU SoM Class of 2008. I started at Weathernews, Inc. in July 2008, where I currently produce 10-day global marine forecasts that are used to provide services to our shipping clients in every ocean basin, as well as issue worldwide tropical storm forecasts for both hemispheres. OU and the School of Meteorology helped me gain the opportunity to realize my dream of becoming a meteorologist by providing me with a well-rounded education, and the prestige and quality of the School of Meteorology helped me to secure a position with a premier private weather company shortly after graduation. The coursework in synoptic meteorology has been particularly useful when forecasting for large scale marine weather patterns, and the contacts I made at OU were very valuable after graduation. Working in the private sector has allowed me to gain experience working with international colleagues and clients, and every day stresses the importance and impact of accurate weather forecasting on the global transportation and shipping industry.
