Research Associate - CIRES/ESRL/GSD - Boulder

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado and the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) have an immediate opening for a research associate with expertise in mesoscale data assimilation and mesoscale modeling with strong computer skills. The research associate will have an appointment within Assimilation and Modeling Branch of the ESRL Global Systems Division. The Research associate will work as part of team in testing and refining assimilation and modeling components for real-time operational application. Particular foci will be on development of the Rapid Refresh (RR) and High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR), which are designed to provide state-of-the-art model guidance for aviation, severe weather, and renewable energy. The position is located in Boulder, Colorado.

Qualifications

-PhD in the atmospheric sciences or a closely related discipline.
-Significant experience in mesoscale modeling.
-Knowledge of meso- and storm-scale meteorology and aviation-related applications.
- Fluent knowledge of Fortran and Fortran 90 including debugging and optimizing code.
- Proficiency in UNIX-based scripting languages
- Expertise with Linux and UNIX operating systems and use of MPI
- The ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and work effectively in a team environment.

Desirable Skills

- Knowledge of WRF mesoscale model system including WPS and WRFPOST
- Data assimilation experience, especially with radar and satellite data.
- Experience with operational data assimilation systems, including GSI
- Knowledge of synoptic meteorology and forecasting experience
- Experience maintaining robust community code in a real-time environment
- Experience with the verification of high-resolution meteorological forecasts

The position will be filled as a Research Associate in CIRES, University of Colorado at Boulder, and will be eligible for employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation per year.
