Unidata Summer Workshop
For those students (and faculty) that are going to be around this summer and what an opportunity to see what all Unidata does, this workshop may be just for you.

Hi everybody,
What are you doing this summer? Why not attend the Unidata Users Workshop, "Navigating Earth System Science Data," 9-13 July 2012, to be held in Boulder, Colorado.
Many prominent presenters will be covering a host of different topics at the workshop. For a full list of presenters, topics, and other important information, visit the Workshop web site at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/events/2012UsersWorkshop.
Bring your laptop and be ready for new ideas to take home. There will be time for one-on-one discussions with presenters and developers, and we have carved out time for some fun activities too.
Students are encouraged to attend; there are a limited number of student stipends available to defray expenses. See the web site for details.
We hope you'll join us for this very special event! Registration is open until June 4, 2012. Register today!
The workshop is organized by the Unidata Users Committee and staff, and sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

SoM Computing Update: The End of an Era
As another academic semester begins, changes in some of the computing services of the department are going into production. If you recall, rossby died a quick and horrible death and caused problems for many as the machines services were no longer available. Rossby offered e-mail, remote access to departmental web space, and user account management. With Rossby gone, the School of Meteorology marks the end of an era.
What remains of these services? E-mail, for one, will no longer be available. The OU e-mail system is the primary e-mail for the university and as such is the preferred method for the school. User account management has been moved to its own machine and is behind the firewall of the NWC network resulting in better performance and easier maintenance. Advantages to users are quicker response times and easier access to changing passwords. Finally access to user file space on the web server is limited though machines located behind the firewall at the NWC.
Accessing user web space is now a bit more detailed. One consequence of the loss of Rossby is that only active students, faculty and staff have access to user space on the school's web server . Alumni and former students who were actively maintaining a web site will need to migrate to another service provider. This allows the department to be in compliance with university policies and procedures regarding user accounts of graduates. Any graduate can contact the SoM computing staff and they will be able to assist with the transfer of content. Current students, faculty and staff can access user web space via machines in the Linux and Mac labs. A FAQ will be published shortly detailing the procedures on how to make transfers or edit content remotely.
Finally the last piece of news, the current file system for users is moving towards seven years in age and is approaching the end of its lifetime. A new file server has been setup and will go into active service sometime in the next couple of weeks. Check back to this site and check e-mail regarding the exact time. Access to lab machines will be disrupted and we are looking to set a date and time when users will be the least inconvenienced.

Rossby Troubles
Approximately a couple of weeks ago, the server known as Rossby began having major troubles with its file system. It has finally bit the dust and is not responding to any repair methods. Since the main function for that machine was e-mail and nearly 100% of the current student body, faculty and staff are using the OU Exchange System for e-mail, SoM will not be replacing the machine. This means that access to web space will need to be through the lab machines which are behind the NWC Network firewall. Information on how to work with the firewall can be found in the FAQ section of the SoM Computing website.
The computing staff has been working on a new user authentication system that will make it much easier for users to change their passwords. No longer will users need to log onto Rossby. Check back mid week to this site for details. We will begin rolling out the new system early this week.

Firmware update for VPN today
This from the NWC NOC:
The VPN will be updated with new firmware at 1700 today. Previous
updates of the system have been relatively painless, so we expect
less than 1/2-hour downtime.
HOPEFULLY, this will fix the "dropout" issues we've all been seeing.
If not, we'll open a ticket with the vendor next week.
