How do I get an account for the SoM Computing Systems?
SoM Computing account forms can be found on the SoM Computing Corner web page. Just complete the form and return it to the main office NWC 5900. Accounts are processed on Fridays. If you supplied a current e-mail address, you will be e-mailed that your account is ready. You can then pick up your account information in NWC 5900 with a valid pictureID.
Great! Now that I have my account, how do I connect?
Once you have your username and password, you can just go to any of the rooms with publicly accessible machines and log on.

Remotely, the SoM requires that all logins use Secure Shell (ssh). For Apple Mac OS X and Linux/Unix machines, ssh comes as part of the operating system. For MS Windows, SoM likes to use the SSH application SSHSecureShellClient
I cannot connect to SoM machines from anywhere outside of the NWC. What is up with that?
The internal computing networking at the NWC is protected by a firewall that helps to limit the bad guys and viruses from the outside getting to the inside and causing trouble. This is a good thing. But what it does mean is that access is limited from outside the NWC. There are methods for accessing computers inside the NWC from the outside. One is by using a bastion host to first log in, prove that you are indeed permitted to access computer resources inside the NWC, and then pass on through.

Once you have a departmental computing account, you can then request a bastion account.
I want to change my password but it is not accepting my new password, what do I do?
To change your password for your SoM computing account, you must first ssh to rossby.metr.ou.edu. Once logged in, type the commands passwd. You will be asked for your old password to confirm the password change. You will be asked for your new password and then to confirm the password. Once that has been completed, within the hour, the password change will be made for the complete system and your now have a new password.
