username@rossby.metr.ou.edu
How can I access my e-mail?
There are several ways of accessing a user's e-mail. You can log onto rossby.metr.ou.edu and use pine. You can use an e-mail client such as Eudora, Outlook, or Apple Mail.app and POP. Or you can use the web interface.
What are the POP e-mail settings?
For POP, the following are the settings:

Incoming Server: rossby.metr.ou.edu
SMTP Server: rossby.metr.ou.edu

Note that in order to send mail using the SOM SMTP service, you must be on an OU network. This means that you:

https://webmail.metr.ou.edu/

Help for using the web interface is accessible once you have connected to your account.
I have more than one e-mail account. Can I consolidate my e-mail?
Yes you can. Log on to the departmental mail server (rossby.metr.ou.edu) and create a .forward file. This file can be edited with vi or pico. Once in the editor, include a line for the e-mail account you wish your e-mail to be forwarded.

Here is an example of creating a .forward file using vi:

vi .forward

i
myname@gmail.com
:wq

Check for the file by using ls -a and you should see the .forward file listed. You can cat the file and see its contents which should be the e-mail address of the account you wish to have your e-mail forwarded.
Notice about SoM e-mail services!
While the department runs its own e-mail service, the university only recognizes the main campus e-mail system run by OUIT as the official e-mail of the university. Students and faculty are encouraged to use this as their primary e-mail service.

The current machine that hosts e-mail for the department is old and is approaching the end of its life cycle. Students and faculty are encouraged to migrate from the SoM mail system to the university hosted Exchange Server. The link to accessing the OU e-mail system and for more information regarding OU e-mail is http://exchange.ou.edu.
