Linux Lab Update

For the next couple of days (Sep 30 - Oct 2), the Linux lab (NWC 5720) will be having new images of the OS installed on the machines. This is to update some softwares that are needed for classes. These upgrades include GEMPAK, NCL, IDV and a separate Python framework. When you enter the lab, there may be 2-4 machines that will be undergoing the updates. I will be keeping in mind the class schedule and will work on not having updates occurring while there is a need of the machine for class. I hope to have the new image pushed out to all the a machines by Friday Oct 2.

Conflicker Strikes

From the NWC Network Operations Center (NOC):

Yes, yes indeed. We have Conficker.

All of the wireless touchpanels in the building which use XP (wired apparently OK, wireless, not so much) have been infected. AV guys will be down this afternoon to work on them.

Note that this is pretty much all over campus as well, not just here. If you have users who are wireless that complain about connectivity issues, check them for Conficker first rather than wait for the IT Security MAC lock-out alert – they are kind of busy right now.

Gary

Note the connectivity problems that may be occurring with wireless. If you are needing to check your machine. refer to the OU IT help page:

Happy April Fools 2009

Today is the day that the Conficker computer trojan/worm is to come alive. OUIT has made a website regarding all aspects of how to protect or check your machine to see if it is infected. If you suspect that your machine may be affected, check out the OUIT information link.

Data server still out but lab machines OK

Well, I am still having issues with the second data server. The current system is not wanting to recognize the raid. Later this week I will install a different OS and see if the drivers are better. If that does not work, it may be a deeper hardware issue that is not showing itself. Keep checking here for updates.

All the linux machines in NWC 5720 are in working order and running fine. If there are any issues regarding connectivity, many of the machines are being turned off when users log off. Keep in mind that remote access to these machines requires that the machines be left on and running.

Data server fails over break

Sometime on 25 Decemeber 2008, one of the departments LDM servers failed due to a bad power supply. When a fix was rendered, the machine returned to operational status. Unfortunately, the second LDM server did not return to operations and is currently off line. All data but radar (level II and nids) are currently available. The current timeline for return to operations for the down server is sometime early next week.
