Service Climatologist Position at the Northeast RCC

The Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC) in collaboration with the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science at Cornell University is seeking a service climatologist.The Service Climatologist will develop and disseminate data summaries, educational material and outreach publications in support of the NRCC and use the NRCC database to access data in response to stakeholder requests and convey this information either verbally or through electronic means. Similarly, the Service Climatologist will use available data and data summaries to respond to inquiries from the media and public and private stakeholders concerning anomalous climate conditions in the Northeast region. Additionally, the Service Climatologist will assist in other assigned NRCC activities.

This includes documenting computer code and writing decision tool use instructions; developing extended reports on significant climate events; monitoring current climate conditions and impacts; assisting in proposal, presentation and journal manuscript preparation; and the incorporation of new data sources into the NRCC database. The climatologist may be also be asked to represent the NRCC (either as a speaker or attendee) at scientific and/or stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelors degree in atmospheric science, statistics or another relevant field and at least six months of relevant experience in the area of climate services.Applicants should be self-motivated, able to focus on multiple projects simultaneously and possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills.The most qualified candidates will be proficient in the suite of Microsoft Office software and have experience in general computer programming, advanced web programming and/or Geographic Information Systems. Demonstrated outreach experience including the preparation and delivery of presentations to non-scientific audiences will be beneficial.
