This talk will summarize the results of several papers published during the last few years. Daily weather data are analyzed to document the intraseasonal-to-multidecadal variability of West African mesoscale convective weather systems and the InterTropical Front (ITF) that is the leading edge of the southwesterly monsoon flow from the tropical Atlantic. Associations between these phenomena are quantified statistically with a view to underpinning seasonal prediction, and applications are presented for the real-time monitoring of monsoon season quality.
